“Drexler proposal fails because of own party!”

Praise and criticism comes from the FPÖ after the Styrian governor's proposal to tighten the citizenship law.  

Styrian Governor Christopher Drexler (ÖVP) has renewed his call for a tightening of the Citizenship Act via the "Krone" newspaper. As reported, 841 people have already been naturalized this year - 168 of them from Afghanistan and Syria.

The regional leader therefore wants to tighten up the rules, is calling for the shortened six-year period to be abolished and, in addition to a test with historical questions, "every applicant should also demonstrate that they share our Western values". Unsurprisingly, this demand has opened doors with the FPÖ.

"Unfortunately, the ÖVP at federal level is unable to implement a tightening of the citizenship law due to the unspeakable coalition with the Greens. The governor's demand is therefore failing because of his own federal party," says Styrian FPÖ leader Mario Kunasek.

The reform, which he believes is urgent, will only happen with the FPÖ. "The Turquoise-Greens have proven that they can't get it done, and a Babler-SPÖ would not be willing to take action in this regard anyway," says the blue top candidate.
