Drunken joyride ends in a crash on a bend

Opportunity is known to make thieves, but drunk drivers too? A 24-year-old from the district of Hermagor grabbed someone else's car for a drunken joyride.

Obviously drunk, the 24-year-old staggered out of an apartment at around 1.00 a.m. and found an unlocked car with the keys inside. He did not miss this opportunity and began his joyride. "He then drove the car along Gailtal Straße (B 111) in the direction of Liesing. Then he came to a left-hand bend after the Podlaniger bridge near Kötschach-Mauthen," the police describe the journey.

That's when the drunk driver found out that he wasn't such a gifted driver after all, as he misjudged the bend and took it far too tightly. "He crashed into a concrete wall with the left side of the vehicle and came to a standstill in the left-hand lane," reported the police. While the 24-year-old escaped without any scratches, the car sustained serious material damage - it was no longer roadworthy.

The driver informed the police himself and a breathalyzer test carried out on him was, unsurprisingly, positive. He has now (temporarily) lost his driver's license and faces charges from the public prosecutor's office.
