Gmunden man (36) suffered a fatal fall on the Untersberg

A climbing tour on Salzburg's Untersberg mountain ended fatally. A 36-year-old man and his partner climbed there together on Saturday, but only the woman returned.

At around 12.30 p.m., the 36-year-old from Gmunden and his partner climbed the 1800-metre-high Untersberg near Salzburg via the Dopplersteig. The couple separated at the upper Rositte, the man wanted to climb to the summit via the east ridge.

Fatally injured
However, at the first key point, he fell into a steep rock gully for unknown reasons. The climber was so badly injured that he died at the scene of the accident and had to be rescued by a police helicopter and flown down to the valley. His shocked partner had to be cared for by the crisis intervention team.
