Slovenia extends price regulation for petrol

In Slovenia, fuel prices sold at filling stations outside the highway network will remain capped for another year. The government passed an ordinance on Thursday that maintains the previous price model.

The maximum margin for normal petrol remains at 0.0794 euros per liter, while for diesel it is 0.0783 euros, according to a government statement. Fuel retailers are complaining that the margins are too low and are jeopardizing their investment plans.

Petrol station operators want higher margins
In view of the current market conditions, petrol station operators and the Slovenian Chamber of Commerce (TZS) no longer consider price regulation to be necessary. In the event that it should nevertheless be retained, the dealers had argued for an increase in the maximum margins to the European level. According to them, margins in Slovenia are only a third of the European average.

Prices are determined every two weeks
Since 2022, fuel prices off the freeways in Slovenia have been determined every two weeks according to a price model based on the development of prices on the global market and the euro-dollar exchange rate. At freeway filling stations, however, the filling station operators are free to determine the prices on the market.
