Do we need digital solutions in the election?

The krone.at forum is a place of daily discussion and debate. In our new "Readers' debate" section, we want to highlight special comments and ask the community for their opinion on an exciting aspect. Today it's about the last EU election, annoyances with postal voting and possible approaches to digitalization in the election process. Where do you think change is needed?

ID Austria is not accepted

There has been a lot of discussion in the Krone community over the last few days about the election results and the voting process. krone.at user KG6363 complained that the ID Austria, an electronic proof of identity, is not valid as proof of identity at the polling station and therefore one or two people certainly had to return home from the polling station without having voted.

In the most recent European elections, as many as 15% of voters cast their vote by post. Unfortunately, this sometimes led to annoyances, such as late or non-delivery of polling cards. This method of voting has been possible in Austria since 2007 - is it now time to modernize the voting process once again? Could a digital voting platform that allows voters to vote online from the comfort of their own home possibly solve this problem?
