Dress code in the office: excessive or sensible?

In some work environments it is an unspoken law, in others it is clearly prescribed: the dress code. While some people sit in jeans and T-shirts in the office, others have to wear business attire. This can be particularly tedious in summer. You can end up looking enviously at those in shorts while you yourself are sweating in a suit. Do you think dress codes still make sense these days?
