Wrong decision that costs the Bulls millions

Scene Vienna: In Rapid's match against Salzburg, the Viennese champions should have been awarded a penalty instead of a second goal. Referee Christian-Petru Ciochirca decided otherwise. A wrong decision that could cost the Bulls millions.

The scene in Madrid: Bayern's supposed 2:2 in stoppage time against Real was whistled too early by referee Szymon Marciniak for offside. A controversial scene, but the VAR was unable to intervene because the referee used his whistle. A million-dollar loss, Bayern's chance of reaching the Champions League final was stolen

Video evidence was introduced to prevent human error by the referees. The system never really caught on, and VAR has polarized all countries and leagues since its introduction.

Rethinking
Long waiting times and emotional jubilation are followed by disappointment, even experts are confused. The video assistant referee ushered in a new era, but the controlling system has not yet been perfected. More and more money is at stake, so the consequences of wrong decisions are all the more dramatic. A rethink is needed, otherwise the VAR will lead itself ad absurdum.
