Iga Swiatek dethrones Aryna Sabalenka in Madrid!

Iga Swiatek got her revenge in a repeat of last year's final at the WTA 1000 tournament in Madrid! 

In a battle lasting 3:11 hours, the world number one from Poland defeated defending champion Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus, who is second in the WTA rankings, 7:5, 4:6, 7:6(7) after fending off three match points. At 5:6 and in the tie-break, Sabalenka was unable to take her chances.

For Swiatek, it was her first title in the Spanish capital. In addition to the 1000 WTA points, Swiatek can look forward to prize money of 963,225 euros. It was her 20th WTA title and third of the season. She had also won the 1000-point tournaments in Doha and Indian Wells.
