This year's Zentralmatura begins on Thursday with the five-hour exams in German. It is the only examination subject in which all students are given the same tasks.

At the start of the school-leaving examination season, the subject in which all candidates at AHS and vocational secondary schools (BHS) have to pass their exams is on the agenda. 

A total of 41,300 examination booklets were delivered.

Mathematics and English to follow
After the first day, the Central Matura will take another break: Mathematics will be the second subject on May 7, followed by English (May 8), French (May 13), Italian (May 14), Spanish and the minority languages Slovenian, Croatian and Hungarian (May 15), Greek and Latin (May 16).

As in previous years, the report card grade of the last class is included in the Matura grade. Students with a satisfactory or better grade in the annual report are therefore largely protected from failing.
