Uli Hoeneß follows up:
“Fiercely determined to make my opinion clearer”
Defuse? Not at all ... In the spat with coach Thomas Tuchel, Bayern's honorary president Uli Hoeneß isn't even thinking of backing down, rather he's going one better. The 72-year-old is "hell-bent on making my opinion clearer again", as he explained to "Kicker".
Background: Hoeneß had been quoted by a panel discussion of the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" as saying that Tuchel "has a different attitude. He doesn't think he can improve (Alphonso) Davies, (Aleksandar) Pavlovic or (Jamal) Musiala. If it doesn't work out, you should buy someone else." Hoeneß, on the other hand, believes "you should work hard on them and give them self-confidence".
Statements that Tuchel cannot accept, the criticism is "miles away from reality", according to the outgoing coach's counterattack. The 50-year-old felt his coaching honor had been violated.
Hoeneß does not deviate
Anyone expecting an apology or correction from Hoeneß is mistaken. The former Bayern board boss stands by his opinion and will not allow his mouth to be shut in the future.
The dispute comes at the worst possible time for Bayern, as the German record champions face Real Madrid in the semi-finals of the Champions League on Tuesday. The Munich team will hardly need any disruptive noises - and then from their own ranks ...
