“Admission tickets would turn Hallstatt into a museum”
The mayor of the tourism hotspot Hallstatt sees no benefit in the Venetian model of every visitor having to buy an admission ticket. But the small town's politicians are by no means inactive: Find out here what steps will follow and what the measures taken so far have achieved.
Riots broke out in Venice on Wednesday. As the "Krone" newspaper reported, several hundred activists had protested - not always peacefully - against the newly introduced admission ticket regulations, distributed fake access codes, persuaded tourists not to have their access codes checked and even tried to block the streetcars in Mestre, the mainland part of the world-famous lagoon city. The main criticism: the city would degenerate into a theme park and residents would also have to deal with permanent access controls in their home town.
Not an option for Hallstatt
All this need not worry the people of Hallstatt for the time being, as Mayor Alexander Scheutz (SPÖ) is against an entrance fee for the jewel of the Salzkammergut. There are several reasons for this:
