Only mountains of rubble
Tornadoes cause severe damage in the USA
Several tornadoes have caused extensive damage in the Midwest of the USA. The city of Omaha and the surrounding area in the state of Nebraska were hit particularly hard. Hundreds of houses were damaged there.
Photos and videos showed buildings of which only a mountain of rubble remained. There are also reports of some injuries. No fatalities have been reported so far.
Thousands of households lost power
"We were very fortunate that there were very few injuries," said Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer. The warning systems in the city, which has a population of around half a million, worked well. That saved lives.
In the Lancaster district, around 70 people were rescued from an industrial building that was brought down by the storm. On its destructive path, a tornado moved across the Missouri River into the neighboring state of Iowa. There it caused severe damage in the small town of Minden, for example.
At least 60 tornadoes and severe hurricanes were reported in five states on Friday. According to the weather service, the severe storms could last until Sunday. Severe weather warnings were issued for more than 50 million inhabitants. In addition to storms and heavy rain, hail was also expected in some places.
