Jiu-Jitsu trio
Only one can fight their way to the “World Games”
The three red and gold jiu-jitsu aces Lisa and Anna Fuhrmann and Julia Blawisch will be competing at the Grand Prix in Paris this weekend. Only one of this trio can qualify for the World Games in China.
Some Austrian athletes already have their ticket for the 2024 Olympics in Paris in the bag, while many are currently fighting for it or will be doing so in the coming months. The focus of Burgenland's female jiu-jitsu athletes has recently been on preparing for the very large-scale Grand Slam in Paris this weekend - and the European Championships in Gelsenkirchen in May. And in the long term? Because jiu-jitsu is not an Olympic sport, there is the possibility of qualifying for the World Games in Chengdu in 2025. But with one big catch!
Chance for revenge
Because with siblings Anna (up to 48 kg) and Lisa (up to 63 kg) Fuhrmann from the Wallerner Club and Julia Blawisch (up to 70 kg) from the Dragonfighters Bruckneudorf, there are three internationally very successful red and gold athletes. Anna and Lisa already took part in the 2022 World Games in Alabama (US), but didn't win a medal there. And unfortunately, only one of them has the chance to return and take revenge: Lisa, who is currently doing well in fourth place in the World Games rankings.
"My weight class no longer exists," explains Anna, who actually still had a score to settle, "I was injured two years ago before the World Games and wasn't able to prepare optimally. It's a shame, but moving up a class would be too costly." She is therefore concentrating on the events outside of the World Games. Which Julia Blawisch also has to do: "There would also be the Combat Games, but there's no date or time yet."
The trio's start to the season at the European Cup in Beveren (Bel) in March was solid, and now the Grand Slam is just around the corner. "I feel fit," says Lisa, "the opponents are pretty strong again, but anything is possible. I'm looking forward to being on the mat and stepping on the gas." For the 22-year-old, it's all about more important points in the World Games qualifiers.
Julia Blawisch is looking forward to a well-staffed class up to 70 kg: "There are 13 of them, which is an unusually high number. I don't know about a third of them - and to be honest, I'd prefer opponents I don't know. Then I'm not biased." Anna Fuhrmann is also hoping for a good competition: "It's been pretty stressful for me recently with university, work and training. I want to try to switch off well on the day of the competition and concentrate on fighting."
