House in flames
Two residents in hospital after major fire
Major alarm for the Floriani firefighters on Wednesday night: residents of an apartment building in Kennelbach called the emergency services after noticing the disaster. When the fire department arrived at the scene, the building was already fully engulfed in flames.
The fire departments from the surrounding communities of Wolfurt, Bildstein and Bregenz had also rushed to Kennelbach at around 2.30 am. Some of the residents there had already fled to safety. Other people were taken out of the house by the rescue services and brought to a meeting point set up by the Red Cross.
For a long time, it was not clear whether there were still people in the building. It was only clear at around 4.45 a.m. that the missing persons were not in the burning house.
A total of eight people were slightly injured in the blaze. Seven suffered smoke inhalation and one person suffered a leg injury. They were taken to nearby hospitals.
The residential building suffered major damage. The 80 or so firefighters were busy extinguishing and re-extinguishing the fire until the early hours of the morning.
The residents spent the rest of the night in the old municipal office and now have to be housed in emergency accommodation as the building is no longer habitable. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
