A new life for old building corpses

More and more restaurants in Austria are standing empty. A similar trend is also emerging for supermarkets and shopping centers. In Burgenland, a non-profit housing cooperative has specialized in breathing new life into the corpses of buildings. 

In 1988, a Billa branch was opened in Großpetersdorf in the Oberwart district. The business flourished, attracted more and more customers and was expanded twice. Nevertheless, the store eventually became too small and no longer met the requirements. Four years ago, the retail chain therefore built a new branch, more than twice the size, including a large parking lot, in the immediate vicinity of the previous location. The old building had been empty ever since.
