Selmayr nominated as EU ambassador to the Vatican
Martin Selmayr, the former representative of the European Commission in Austria, has been nominated as the new EU ambassador to the Vatican. He caused a stir last September when he described Austria's dependence on Russian natural gas as "blood money".
Since 1 February, Selmayr has been a visiting professor of European law at the Institute for Innovation and Digitalization in Law at the University of Vienna for six months. Prior to this, he headed the European Commission Representation in Austria for four years. Wolfgang Bogensberger, Deputy Head of the Commission Representation for many years, is currently Managing Director of the EU Mission in Vienna.
92 embassies in Rome
A total of 92 embassies are located at the Holy See in Rome, including that of the EU. On Tuesday in Brussels, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell announced his nominated heads of delegation, heads of office and chargés d'affaires for the upcoming changeover. In total, there are 44 people who still need the green light from their host countries before they can actually be appointed.
The Vatican has diplomatic relations with 184 states as well as the EU and the Sovereign Order of Malta.
