Unexpected stop
Iran attack forced AUA flight to land
The air attack from Iran on Israel also affected an Austrian Airlines long-haul flight from Bangkok to Vienna. As the airspace of Jordan, Iran, Iraq and Israel, among others, was closed, the aircraft had to take a detour - and finally land in Athens.
The Boeing 777-200ER was actually supposed to fly directly from Bangkok to Vienna. Flight OS026 was scheduled to land at 5.35 a.m. - but according to a report by Austrian Wings, the arrival was delayed.
Safe onward flight would not have been possible
Due to the airspace closures, the aircraft had to take a detour. Due to the increased fuel consumption, a safe non-stop flight to Vienna was no longer possible.
The pilots therefore decided to make a stopover in Athens. The aircraft was refueled there and was then able to fly on to Vienna.
The passengers reached their destination safely at 9.19 a.m., several hours late.
