D: Patrol finds 18 kilograms of gold during car check
A plainclothes patrol of the German traffic police discovered 18 kilograms of gold in a car during a freeway check in Bavaria. The officers provisionally arrested the two occupants.
The public prosecutor's office had the gold confiscated and opened an investigation into suspected money laundering.
It was initially unclear how much the gold was worth
According to the police, the gold bars were home-made gold bars without an embossed carat number indicating the gold content of the respective alloy. According to current prices on the legal gold market, 18 kilograms of the cheapest alloy with eight carats would be worth over 400,000 euros, pure gold with 24 carats well over a million.
"Abnormalities" on the vehicle led to the find
The incident took place on Good Friday, but was only reported by the police now. According to the police, the check took place on the A99 at the Aschheim/Ismaning junction north-east of Munich. The police initially noticed unspecified "anomalies" on the vehicle and eventually found the smuggling hideout.
