Fan.at match of the round
Promotion is very much on the cards for Rotenberg
The scenarios are familiar: Potential promotion candidates to the Regionalliga West have not always played the last few games of the season with full ambition in order to avoid the jump to the unloved Westliga. As of Saturday, the league leaders in the elite league are FC Rotenberg.
The Wälder defeated the previous leaders Lauterach 5:1 in the Fan.at match of the round. They want to stay in first place. Chairman Klaus Schwärzler acknowledges the sporting ambition of his players: "For us, there is no question of not letting our best players play and giving away one or two duels to avoid becoming champions." This is not an everyday attitude; games were often lost on purpose. The highlights were scenes in which players deliberately turned away in front of goal to avoid scoring. "We will play the remaining games with our best line-up, but whether we will end up on top remains to be seen," added Schwärzler.
Kobars quits
There will be one permanent change in the goalkeeper position at Rotenberg: Ex-professional Martin Kobras (37) is hanging up his soccer boots for good, "Now my focus is on training as a teacher and my family." The Lingenau native played an impressive 157 Bundesliga matches for SCR Altach and 173 matches in the 2nd division.
