New York metropolitan area shaken by violent quake
A violent earthquake shook the New York metropolitan area on Friday morning. The epicenter was in Lebanon in the state of New Jersey, about 65 kilometers west of the US metropolis.
According to the authorities, the quake had a magnitude of 4.8, although it was initially reported to have had a magnitude of 5.5. According to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the earth tremors occurred at 10.20 a.m. local time (4.20 p.m. CEST) at a depth of 4.7 kilometers.
Quake felt along the entire east coast
According to the United States Geological Survey, residents reported feeling the quake all along the East Coast, as well as in the neighboring states of Connecticut and Massachusetts. According to the Weather Channel, a US provider of weather forecasts and weather-related news on cable and satellite television, the tremors were also felt in Boston and Philadelphia.
Fire department: no reports of damage
In Manhattan, the quake was felt as a slight rumbling, US media reported. The New York Fire Department announced that there were initially no reports of damage to buildings.
