Duty ends soon
Mild weather tempts drivers to change their wheels early
Many drivers in Carinthia have already booked their wheel change appointment. However, the ÖAMTC warns against too much haste.
The winter tire obligation ends again in Austria on April 15. As a result, Carinthian garages already have their hands full. "In principle, there is no reason not to change tires before April 15," says ÖAMTC technician Christian Wastian. However, he cautions. "You should always keep an eye on the weather forecast, because you should only really change your tires when it is consistently warm and the snow and ice have finally receded."
Those who have planned a trip to the mountains should still wait. Even on wet and slippery roads and in temperatures just above freezing, winter tires simply provide better grip.
Check tread depth
But you shouldn't wait too long to change your tires. This is because winter tires have a number of weaknesses in warm temperatures. Among other things, they increase the braking distance and increase tread wear. "Winter tires are designed for the cold season," explains the ÖAMTC expert, who has an important tip for all drivers before switching to summer tires. "Insufficient tread depth on all types of tires can lead to aquaplaning in wet conditions. Therefore, the minimum tread depth should not be undercut under any circumstances."
