Observer status now
Palestinians want to become part of the UN again
The Palestinians have resumed the procedure for full membership of the United Nations. They have had observer status for more than ten years. President Mahmoud Abbas applied for membership back in 2011.
They were granted observer status through the adoption of a resolution (in November 2012). The United Nations Charter stipulates that a two-thirds majority is required for a state to be admitted. The Security Council must also make a recommendation beforehand. Observers doubt that this will happen and point to the veto right of the USA, Israel's closest ally.
Countries such as Austria and Germany also do not recognize Palestine as a separate state, as such a state would first have to be agreed with Israel. Nevertheless, Palestinian UN envoy Riyad Mansour has now asked for the application from 2011 to be examined this month.
Arab League supports application
Support has come from the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the Non-Aligned Movement. They pointed out that 140 member states had already "recognized the state of Palestine".
