Kremlin: Have conquered territory the size of Vienna in 2024

According to Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, the Russian armed forces have conquered 403 square kilometers of territory in Ukraine since the beginning of the year. That would be roughly the size of Vienna. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selensky contradicts this claim.

The reports from both sides could not be independently verified. According to the Russian defense minister, the Russian army is "pushing the Ukrainian units back to the west." In March, control was gained over five towns and villages in the east. Since the beginning of the year, a total area of 403 square kilometers is said to have been conquered, which is roughly the size of Vienna.

Injured in rocket attack
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky denied this and referred to a rocket attack in the city of Dnipro in his evening video address. At least 18 people were injured, including five children who are now being treated in hospitals. A university and a kindergarten were also damaged.

Against this backdrop, the President once again called for more international help with air defense. "The air defense systems that exist in the world must not simply gather dust somewhere on bases when they could save thousands of lives from Russian terror."
