Beach volleyball player Philipp Waller traveled back to Austria from Brazil with fourth place in his luggage. More importantly, however, there were no health problems. This was because he had to have an operation in the fall due to a hole in his lung.

From qualifying to fourth place! While Styrian beach volleyball player Philipp Waller had to call it a day before the main competition at the first Challenge tournament in Recife, Brazil, things went all the better last weekend in Saquarema (Bra). Cuba's run was only halted in the semi-finals with a 1-2 defeat. In the small final, he and his Tyrolean partner Martin Ermacora also lost out to France by the narrow margin of 1-2.

"I was nervous before the first tournament, different rules apply in a qualifier," laughs the man from Mühldorf. "At the end of the season last year, we showed that we had come together well. So it's all the better that we can build on that early in the season." But one thing is paramount after the two tournaments: "The important thing is that we are both healthy."

Which was no longer the case for Waller in the fall! He even had to have an operation at short notice. "I had a spontaneous pneumothorax, in other words a hole in my lung. That was rather dramatic. I was no longer able to lie on my right side." After a tournament in Innsbruck, he went straight to hospital. "My situation worsened again there and I was given a drainage tube in bed before the operation."

"Had to learn to walk again, so to speak"
A break of just under two months was the result. "The first one and a half were really tough. In terms of pain, it was much worse than any knee surgery I've ever had," the 28-year-old recalls. "I basically had to learn how to walk again. Walk 500 meters, then take a break and sit down. I'm all the happier now that it's working so well." Just like in Brazil, where he was still feeling it. "I find it even harder in the heat than in the cool air in Austria. But we worked well."
