Thousands of dogs and cats are waiting for a home in Austrian animal shelters. In order to increase the chances of so-called "long sitters" being adopted, the "Krone" animal corner is launching a special campaign together with Nestlé Purina. Starting in March, an "animal of the month" will be presented. The right person for the furry friend will receive a delicious goodie when they are adopted.

An ill-considered acquisition, a change in circumstances, death, financial challenges - there are various reasons why an animal ends up in a shelter. Unfortunately, many of them often wait years, if not their whole lives, to be adopted.

Throughout Austria, there are many furry friends who are considered "long sitters". Because of their breed, needs or even their coat color. These animals have a lot of love to give - and yet they wait in vain.

Major "Animal of the Month" initiative starts in March
The "Krone" animal corner has now launched an animal welfare campaign together with Nestlé Purina Austria to give "hard-to-place" dogs and cats a better chance of finding a forever home. "With the 'Animal of the Month' initiative, Purina, together with the animal corner, has set itself the goal of giving a face to those animals in particular that have been waiting for their family in Austrian animal shelters for a very long time," says Katharina Krenn, Senior Brand Manager at Purina Austria.

From March 2024, we will regularly present a protégé from an animal shelter online and in the "Kronen Zeitung" animal corner. Anyone who adopts the poor four-legged friend will receive a three-month supply of food from Purina in addition to a grateful living creature.

"One of the advantages of adopting a protégé from an animal shelter is that qualified staff already know the characteristics of the respective four-legged friend well. We hope that our campaign will help poor 'long-sitters' find more attention - and in the best-case scenario, their longed-for place in life!"

Liebe geht durch den Magen - lautet „Shilas“ Lebensmotto

Staff-mix dog "Shila" has been in the care of TierQuarTier Vienna since 2021. A lot has happened since the dog was adopted. "When Shila first came to us, she was stressed when we met dogs and was otherwise barely responsive. Now she can go for walks with other dogs and regularly takes part in our social walks. She cuts a very good figure," says animal keeper Tanja about her protégé.

"Shila" is also particularly lovable, balanced and friendly when she visits the "Krone". And she loves dog treats - no matter what time and for what performance. You can see a detailed introduction to "Shila" in our video. If you would like to get to know her, you can find all the information here.

The decisive factor is which animal suits the respective life situation
We often hear prejudices about shelter animals. Most misconceptions revolve around age, behavior due to origin and the health of the dogs and cats. Not every history has to be a difficult one. Negative behaviors in animals are mostly due to previous poor husbandry. Animal shelters pay particular attention to good training and socialization of all animals during their stay.

The more detailed you find out about the breed and general requirements in advance, the better your chances of finding the right animal.
