Deutsche Bahn (DB) and the train drivers' union GDL have agreed on shorter working hours (see video above). Shift workers will work between 35 and 40 hours per week until 2029. Those who work more will also earn more, said Chief Human Resources Officer Martin Seiler.

Shift workers will have a choice between 35 and 40 hours per week. In addition, a wage increase of 420 euros was agreed in two stages: 210 euros more per month from August 1, 2024 and a further 210 euros from April 1, 2025. An inflation adjustment bonus of 2850 euros is also to be paid from March.

Contract runs until December 31, 2025
The new collective agreement runs for 26 months until December 31, 2025, followed by a two-month negotiation phase. This means that strikes are no longer possible until the end of February 2026. "The dispute was tough, but we have now reached an intelligent compromise," said Martin Seiler from Deutsche Bahn.

Prior to the agreement, there had been six labor disputes, a failed moderation and a dispute in court. The union had repeatedly gone on strike in recent months and largely paralyzed rail traffic. The industry was also affected by the cancellation of freight trains.

One of the main sticking points was the reduction in weekly working hours for staff. The GDL had demanded a 35-hour week with the same pay.
