Excluded Russians beat Serbs in front of politicians
The Russian national soccer team, banned from all FIFA and UEFA competitions due to the war of aggression in Ukraine, won a test match against Serbia 4:0 in Moscow on Thursday.
However, the first match against a European team since the start of the war over two years ago was accompanied by political considerations.
Relations between Belgrade and Moscow are considered friendly. Serbia has not participated in the Western sanctions against Russia. For example, Serbia's Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic was at the stadium, having previously met with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov. Both saw goals from Anatoly Miranchuk (22nd/penalty), Maxim Osipenko (32nd), Alexei Miranchuk (57th) and Ivan Sergeyev (91st).
Russia has been banned from all competitive matches by the soccer associations FIFA and UEFA because of the war. However, UEFA allowed the friendly match to go ahead. The result will also be of significance for the world rankings compiled by FIFA.
