Government seeks new National Bank head before election
Instead of at the end of the year as planned, the government is likely to launch the tender for the future four-member board of directors of the National Bank this Saturday. Apparently, the government wants to install the right people quickly before the election. According to information from "Krone", Othmar Karas is also being discussed as head of the central bank.
The ÖVP politician is currently still Vice-President of the EU Parliament, where he frequently deals with financial issues. However, he will no longer be standing in the upcoming EU elections. There is speculation about his possible candidacy in the national elections in Austria with his own list against the ÖVP, and he has not yet denied this. However, a nomination by the government to head the National Bank would take him out of the race, so to speak.
There is as yet no time pressure for the tender, which is being conducted by the General Council of the OeNB under the chairmanship of the President of the Chamber of Commerce, Harald Mahrer. The contracts of the current head will gradually expire next year. Governor Robert Holzmann, who is considered to be close to the FP, is still in office until the end of August 2025. Deputy Governor Gottfried Haber and Eduard Schock will be up in July, while Thomas Steiner's mandate ends in April.
