Container ship brings down three port cranes
A highly spectacular accident occurred at the weekend in the Turkish container port of Evyap, 100 kilometers southeast of Istanbul. A container ship rammed into the pier and knocked over three large harbor cranes. This caused enormous material damage.
The 368-metre-long container ship YM Witness, registered in Hong Kong, was unable to stop in time when entering the port on Saturday, rammed into the pier and subsequently knocked over three cranes that are used to load and unload containers.
Accident resulted in one serious injury
Videos show dock workers running for their lives as the cranes are pushed and eventually topple over. According to Turkish media reports, one of the operators of one of the port cranes that toppled over was seriously injured.
The local port authority also reported that several containers were thrown from the ship into the harbor basin. The cause of the accident was initially unclear and the local authorities were investigating the incident, according to Turkish media.
