Car taken away
Italian woman (103) now wants to drive a moped
Giuseppina Molinari (103) is no longer allowed to drive a car since she was stopped by the police on Monday night in the province of Ferrara in the Emilia-Romagna region without a valid driver's license and vehicle insurance. However, the sprightly senior citizen has now announced in a TV interview that she wants to remain mobile - she wants to get a moped!
As reported, the woman, who was born in 1920, was driving her white Fiat Panda in the municipality of Bondeno at around 1 a.m. when she lost her bearings. She kept driving up and down the same roads. The alerted carabinieri stopped what is probably Italy's oldest traffic offender and confiscated her car.
In an interview with the television station TGR Emilia Romagna, Molinari regretted her night-time journey (see video below), but at the same time she emphasized that the public transport connections between her home in Vigarano Pieve and Bondeno, where her friends live, were not so good. She currently rides her bike to meet them for a game of cards or a coffee.
"Would like to maintain my friendships"
According to media reports, she was in Bondeno almost every day until her car was confiscated. "I want to maintain my friendships and be independent in my commitments, from shopping to playing cards," the 103-year-old emphasized in an interview with the newspaper "Quotidiano Nazionale". That's why she now wants to get a moped.
But she needs a driving or moped license for this. Italian law stipulates that people over the age of 80 must undergo a medical examination every two years so that they can be certified as fit to drive. It is not known whether Molinari has such a certificate.
