Desert landscape
There is an increased risk of avalanches on Carinthia’s mountains
Spectacular images of Carinthia's snow-covered mountains: the Sahara dust that is currently drifting over Austria is transforming them into a desert landscape. The fresh snow also brings with it an increased risk of avalanches.
The snow on Carinthia's mountains has changed color. At the Sonnblick Observatory, it feels as if you have suddenly landed in the desert. Employees at the Sonnblick weather station describe the sight as "impressive".
Sand contributes to glaciers melting faster
"Even if the sand itself is not problematic and, on the contrary, even serves as a fertilizer for many plants, it can contribute to the faster melting of glaciers," explain GeoSphere Austria employees, adding: "If the surface of the snow is no longer white, less solar radiation is reflected, the snow warms up faster and melts."
Increased risk of avalanches
Winter sports enthusiasts in particular have been delighted with the fresh snow over the past few days. But caution is advised. According to the avalanche situation report, there is an acute risk of avalanches - especially in Upper Carinthia (Mölltal, Lieser-Maltatal, in the Gailtal and Carnic Alps). Fresh drift snow is the main problem.
New week brings sunshine
The Italian low brought cloudy and rainy days to Carinthia. According to meteorologists, however, the sun will return next week. "It will become friendlier again on Tuesday. This will last until Friday. Rain is to be expected again at the weekend."
