Salzburg election: top candidates optimistic
439,785 citizens of Salzburg were able to elect their representatives and mayors in 119 municipalities on Sunday. In the city of Salzburg, the ÖVP plummeted, while the SPÖ took first place. The big winner, however, was the KPÖ. You can read about the entire election day in the krone.at ticker.

- The ÖVP is the big election loser in the city of Salzburg. It loses first place in the municipal council to the SPÖ. The SPÖ and KPÖ candidates make it into the run-off.
- The upswing for the KPÖ also creates enthusiasm in the communist stronghold of Graz.

"A very good day for the SPÖ"
Deputy Mayor Bernhard Auinger from the SPÖ in the city of Salzburg was delighted to come first in both the municipal council and mayoral elections, although in the latter he has to go into a run-off with KPÖ-Plus municipal councillor Kay-Michael Dankl. "This is a very, very good day for the City SPD", said Auinger.
Salzburg's KPÖ top candidate Kay-Michael Dankl said that the election had shown that more and more people wanted "a different, honest, social policy" - a policy that lives up to its pre-election promises after the election.
