Interview with an expert
Interview with an expert: “Bans are terrible”
Obesity is becoming a widespread disease and Austrians are getting fatter and fatter. Why is that? How can you lose the flab again, and permanently? The "Krone" spoke to internist Dr. Marina Hornsteiner.
"Krone": Why do so many people become overweight?
Dr. Marina Hornsteiner: Ultimately, it's a question of balance. On the one side of the scale is energy consumption, i.e. basal metabolic rate plus exercise, and on the other side is how much energy I consume. The problem nowadays is that there are a lot of foods on offer - including in advertising - that have a very high energy density but few nutrients and little satiety. Some of the dietary recommendations that are still used today date back to an earlier time, 60 years ago, when people were more physically active.
