2.7 million university books get a new home
2.7 million volumes from the university library are moving from the Ring to Floridsdorf to a new climate-friendly building at the end of the year. The "Krone" was on the building site.
Although studying is increasingly shifting to the digital world, books are still very important. So far, the entire treasure trove of books has been housed in the main university building on the Ring. But not for much longer - at the end of the year they will have a new home, which is currently being built on the Siemensäckern.
On Thursday, Science Minister Martin Polaschek (ÖVP) and University of Vienna Rector Sebastian Schütze visited the building site. The "Krone" was also on site and was allowed to take a ride on the construction crane.
A total of 13,000 square meters will be made available for 2.7 million volumes of the university library. The depot is being built as a climate-friendly new building, with wood being used wherever possible. The costs of 46 million euros are correspondingly high.
