"Krone" commentary
Lena Schilling in the best of company
It's clear that a European politician should know whether Norway is in the EU. And of course such a mistake is more than embarrassing. Most of all Lena Schilling herself.
The Green EU top candidate is in good company with her blackout. How many top politicians have failed to answer the simple question of how much an extra sausage roll or a kilo of butter costs? A former FPÖ politician once confused gigabytes with gigatons, and a Vienna City Councillor for Transport did not know which stations the U1 subway runs between in a "Krone" quiz.
Not to mention the faux pas of former Tyrolean governor Günther Platter, who greeted the native Viennese David Alaba with "How do you do?". All of this was embarrassing, but was not commented on as mercilessly as the Norway question.
In any case, Lena Schilling dealt with the mishap very humorously and openly. The fact that she wrote a seminar paper at university on the referendum in which 52.2 percent of Norwegians rejected EU membership also speaks in her favor. In theory, she should have known that Norway was not in the EU.
However, if you run into the dreaded Peter Klien, you might have a blackout. Schilling at least answered the ORF comedian's questions. Many politicians run away when they see the man. Or have him put in a headlock.
