Despite fines
Climate stickers: 100 arrests this week alone
The climate stickers are back: this could be seen not only on the streets of Vienna in the past few days, but also in the arrests in the federal capital. This week alone, around 100 activists were taken away by the police ...
In the past week alone, officers from the Vienna Provincial Police Directorate had to arrest around 100 climate activists. By comparison, there were just under 900 arrests in the previous year. In addition, around 3700 people were reported to the police, of which around 150 were reported to the criminal justice system.
Fines amounting to 1200 euros
And this despite the fact that a fine of 1,200 euros recently imposed by the Vienna police was confirmed by the provincial administrative court. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) also praised the police in this respect: "The Vienna police are not only taking consistent and decisive action against climate stickers on the streets, but are also imposing severe penalties. This approach will be continued consistently."
Four disruptive actions in just one week
The fact that the number of Last Generation activists arrested this week is so high is due to the extensive disruptive actions carried out over the past few days. First, an intersection in Vienna-Favoriten was paralyzed, on Tuesday climate stickers were placed on the road in front of Schönbrunn Palace.
On Wednesday, demonstrators blocked the entrance to Parliament, and on Saturday the large-scale protest finally took place on Museumsplatz (see photo).
Basic right to climate protection demanded
At their rallies, the activists repeatedly call on those "responsible" to take science seriously and to act with the necessary urgency. What the group wants: a basic right to climate protection in the constitution.
