Dozens killed in fire in Bangladesh’s capital
At least 45 people have died in a fire in a multi-storey shopping center in Bangladesh. The victims were mainly customers of a restaurant. Most of them succumbed to their serious injuries in hospitals. Dozens of other people are injured, many of whom are in a critical condition.
As flames and smoke spread rapidly, according to the fire department, the building called Green Cozy Cottage in the capital Dhaka became a death trap for many shoppers and restaurant guests.
Some were able to climb down a water pipe on the outside of the building and just manage to escape.
Fire only extinguished after three hours
The fire was reportedly extinguished after three hours. The cause of the fire, which broke out on Thursday evening, was initially unclear.
Given the frequent lack of fire safety precautions, large fires in multi-storey buildings in Bangladesh are not uncommon, resulting in many injuries and deaths.
