"Unacceptable situation"
Frauenring calls for a “day of protest” against femicides
Together with a large number of organizations and supporters, the Austrian Women's Ring will take to the streets on Friday to protest resolutely - and in mourning dress - against the numerous femicides in Austria.
The year 2024 began with seven brutal femicides. Since 2018, there have already been 144 femicides.
"This is an unacceptable situation," emphasizes Klaudia Frieben, Chairwoman of the Austrian Women's Ring. Austria is considered a country of femicides.
Any woman can become a victim of femicide, no matter how old she is, where she comes from or what she does for a living. Violence against women knows no nationality, religion or origin.

"Violence against women is a global problem"
"Any woman can become a victim of femicide, no matter how old she is, where she comes from or what she does for a living. Violence against women knows no nationality, religion or origin. Violence against women is a global problem and is therefore not an imported problem," says Frieben.
They can and will no longer accept "this deeply rooted hatred of women" and are therefore appealing to the government and all politicians to "take immediate action to stop male violence against women and femicides".
"Every woman in Austria must be able to live in safety"
"The government, all ministries, provincial governments, cities and municipalities must work together to take effective and sustainable measures against violence. Every woman in Austria must be able to live in safety," she explains.
"We are calling for at least 250 million euros a year and an increase of more than 3,000 full-time jobs to promote equality and prevent violence," says Frieben. This also includes the nationwide expansion of primary prevention.
