The President of the Hungarian Constitutional Court, Tamás Sulyok, is to become the new head of state. This was decided by the parliamentary group meeting of the Hungarian right-wing nationalist ruling party Fidesz on Thursday, as reported by the online portal "Index".

The 67-year-old Sulyok is to succeed the resigned President Katalin Novák.

Last year, Novák had pardoned a man who had been convicted of aiding and abetting the sexual abuse of minors. After the case was made public by a media report at the beginning of February and caused great outrage, the president, who had only been in office for just under two years, was forced to resign.
