End of traffic jam overlooked
Pile-up on the Fernpass with four injured
Because he was distracted by another driver's maneuver, a German driver overlooked the end of a traffic jam on the Fernpass on Sunday and crashed into the stationary vehicle of a fellow countryman. This was pushed onto another car. Four people were injured.
A 55-year-old German national was driving his car northbound on the Fernpass road (B179) at around 11.20 am on Sunday. At the OMV petrol station, he noticed a car whose driver wanted to move into the main lane from the right. According to the information available so far, the 55-year-old was distracted and overlooked the end of the traffic jam directly in front of him. As a result, he hit the stationary car of a 56-year-old German. This car was then pushed onto another car, which was being driven by a 30-year-old German.
Injured persons taken to hospital for clarification
The 55-year-old driver and his wife, the daughter of the 56-year-old involved in the accident (55 and 16 years old, both German nationals) and the passenger of the 30-year-old (a 54-year-old Danish woman) were injured to an indeterminate degree as a result of the collision and were taken to Zams Hospital by the ambulance service for further assessment.
The B179 was only passable on both sides for about an hour for the duration of the accident investigation and recovery of two accident vehicles. The following were deployed: five vehicles from the Nassereith fire brigade with 37 personnel, three ambulances and an emergency doctor (ten personnel), a patrol from the Nassereith police station, a vehicle from the Haiming building yard and two recovery vehicles.
