Drug lab in Mexico with 40 tons of meth discovered

In the northwest of Mexico, security forces have discovered a huge drug laboratory in a rural area. More than 40 tons of methamphetamine and chemicals for the production of synthetic drugs were seized during the operation.

The discovery in the village of Rancho Viejo in the state of Sonora is considered to be the most significant in Mexico for years. No arrests were reported.

Against the backdrop of the so-called drug war, Mexico is suffering from high crime rates and widespread impunity.

High crime and drug cartels
Drug cartels and criminal syndicates control entire regions of the Latin American country and fight among themselves for areas of influence and smuggling routes.

30,000 homicides in the previous year
Last year, more than 30,000 homicides were registered in the country with a population of around 126 million. Most crimes are never solved.
