Hundreds of fires rage
Forest fires in Chile claim dozens of lives
The death toll from the severe forest fires in Chile has risen to over 50. Several people are still missing. On Saturday alone, 143 fires were registered in the country, covering an area of around 21,000 hectares.
Interior Minister Carolina Tohá said that thousands of houses had also been affected by the fires. In the Valparaíso region alone, there were more than 3,000 (see video above).
President Boric had already declared a state of emergency in the affected areas on Friday in order to mobilize all necessary resources.

"Our priority is to save lives"
Boric has now instructed the Ministry of Defense to deploy more military units. "Our priority is to save lives," Boric said on Saturday.
In summer in the southern hemisphere, severe forest fires repeatedly occur in Chile. However, it is suspected that at least some of the fires were started deliberately.
