The drinking water situation improved only slightly this fall. While in Ohlsdorf, Upper Austria, a specially purchased fire hose is serving as an emergency water line for a neighborhood, the Glasner Hütte in Maria Neustift has run dry. Operations had to be shut down prematurely.

“We had to act quickly,” explains Ohlsdorf Mayor Ines Mirlacher, referring to the emergency water line for the Edlach district. The well belonging to the local water cooperative ran dry last weekend, leaving six farmhouses without drinking water. Residents are currently being supplied via a specially purchased fire hose—at a cost of 7,500 euros.

Seeking a Solution for Winter
“The water will be billed at the standard rates,” says the mayor. Since the approximately 1,100-meter-long line is outdoors, it cannot remain in place over the winter. A committee meeting on the matter is scheduled for next week to discuss how to proceed. “If it doesn’t rain, we’ll have to lay a local water line if necessary,” says Mirlacher. The specially purchased hose is to be stored for use in potential future emergency lines.

Mountain Hut Left High and Dry
The Glasner Hütte, located at 800 meters in Maria Neustift, had to close on Thursday due to a water shortage. “We wanted to stay open until the end of November, but our spring is now only producing 25 liters per hour,” explains tenant Michael Schoder. In previous years, the hut’s operations had already depended on the spring’s flow, but it had never had to close because of it before. Usually, the spring provided four to five times that amount of water, even during the summer. “We kept it open as long as possible without restrictions,” says Schoder.
