Before the anniversary: trepidation about the Styrian running highlight

The Welschlauf celebrates its 30th anniversary this year in May. However, there is a big question mark over the future of this popular and traditional event.

Running enthusiasts have always marked the first Saturday in May - the 42.2 kilometers from Ehrenhausen to Wies are considered one of the most scenic routes in Austria. This year, the Welschlauf celebrates its 30th anniversary on May 3rd. Over 2000 athletes will be taking part again.

But is this the last act of this traditional event? The rumor mill is buzzing. "We are also repeatedly confronted with this question - it is clear that the Welschlauf will definitely take place this year - we'll see what happens next," says co-organizer Claudia Pronegg-Uhl.

"No longer in the front row"
Last October, she and the other members of the association approached the heads of the twelve Welschlauf communities: "Because we all love doing this, but we don't want to take on the full responsibility at the age of 70." Possible successors will of course be supported, "but no longer in the front row". So far, there have been good talks with the mayors - but no decision has been made yet. Of course, the jungle of authorities with ever new requirements does not make the search for new organizers any easier.
