Drumbeat! Trump suspends Mexico tariffs again

There was a surprising turnaround on Monday in the case surrounding Donald Trump's planned tariffs on goods from Mexico. As Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum announced during a press conference, the tariffs will be suspended again for at least a month - but not without something in return ...

She had spoken to US President Trump on the phone and had "a good conversation with him", said Sheinbaum. "We have reached agreement in many areas," said the Mexican president. 

Joint border security
Trump had agreed to suspend tariffs on goods from Mexico for at least one month. In return, Mexico will "massively intensify" its fight against drug smuggling into the USA, particularly fetanyl. 

There will also be joint border patrols with the Americans. Sheinbaum announced the deployment of 10,000 additional soldiers to the US border. The USA is also to step up its efforts to combat the illegal export of weapons to Mexico. 

EU nervous about Trump's tariff plans
At the weekend, Trump imposed tariffs of 25 percent on imports from the US neighbors Mexico and Canada and ten percent on energy imports from Canada. An additional ten percent will be imposed on all imports from China. And the EU could soon follow suit, which has led to some disgruntlement in Brussels.
