Paramedic in Poland dies in knife attack

A paramedic in Poland has been attacked by a drunk patient whom he was trying to help. This was announced by Health Minister Izabela Leszczyna on Sunday. The 64-year-old died of his serious injuries in hospital.

Leszczyna expressed her condolences to the relatives of the deceased and announced her support. The attack was carried out on Saturday evening in Siedlce, almost 90 kilometers east of Warsaw. A man had called an ambulance and complained of breathing problems. When the ambulance arrived, the patient (57) grabbed two knives and stabbed one of the two paramedics with them.

The attacked paramedic's colleague was able to overpower the attacker, but the victim died shortly afterwards in hospital. According to the police, the suspect's blood alcohol level was measured at more than two parts per thousand.

Tougher penalties for aggressive patients
Following the incident, Health Minister Leszczyna and Interior Minister Tomasz Siemoniak announced closer cooperation with the security authorities, tougher penalties for aggressive patients and additional safety and emergency training for the emergency services. "Any act of aggression towards people who save lives is absolutely unacceptable and condemnable," it said in a joint statement.
