Probably the oldest Austrian woman died on Friday morning. Margarete Tröstl was 113 years old and last lived in the Schrems nursing and care center (Lower Austria).

The Waldviertel native would have been 114 years old on February 26. She was the oldest person living in Austria and may even have been the oldest person in a German-speaking country.

According to the province of Lower Austria, Tröstl was born Margarete Ecker in Gmünd in February 1911. She experienced the First World War in her youth. "It was a really difficult time. My brothers and I had to start working very early," she later recalled.

Tröstl moved to Vienna with her husband, a trained carpenter and officer, where she worked as a travel assistant at Persil-Werke. After retiring, she returned to the Waldviertel in the early 1970s. Shortly before her 103rd birthday, she moved into the Schrems nursing and care center.

"It was an unforgettable encounter with an impressive personality who was equipped with a great deal of knowledge and experience, but also with a great deal of humor," said Johanna Mikl-Leitner (ÖVP), Governor of Lower Austria. She congratulated Tröstl on her 110th birthday in 2021.
