Hit by car: 77-year-old succumbs to injuries

A terrible accident occurred last night in the Spittal an der Drau area. A 77-year-old man was just about to cross the main road when a car approached. The 55-year-old driver was unable to react quickly enough.

It was pitch dark at night when a 77-year-old man from Spittal was walking past the Marienkapelle chapel in Spittal an der Drau heading north. At the same time, a 55-year-old woman was driving her car on the main road towards the city. The tragic accident occurred when the man tried to cross the road. 

"According to witnesses, however, he was probably not using the nearby protective path," the police report. "The man was subsequently hit by the woman's car and thrown onto the road." The 77-year-old was seriously injured and left lying on the road - the ambulance was called immediately. 

After initial treatment by an emergency doctor, the seriously injured man was taken to hospital in Spittal, but his condition was too poor. "Due to his serious injuries, the 77-year-old was transferred to Klagenfurt Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries at 02:37," said the police.

The driver of the car - a breathalyzer test was negative - and her passenger escaped with the shock, while the car was severely damaged by the force of the accident.
