For the past year, there has been a huge buzz about the so-called "weight loss injection". This is supposed to help people lose weight and achieve long-term results. More and more products are now entering the market, but they are expensive and have to be administered once a week. "MariTide, on the other hand, should only need to be administered once a month.

The aim is to make weight loss easier for obese people. The US biotech giant Amgen has successfully tested a weight loss injection that only needs to be administered once a month for the first time in a phase II study (dosage, side effects, further evidence of efficacy).

"MariTide showed an average weight loss of up to 20 percent after 52 weeks without reaching a plateau in people with obesity or overweight," it says.

Weekly injections currently required
The background: Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk and its US rival Eli Lilly are currently vying for the global billion-euro market for weight loss drugs with GLP-1 reptoragonists (Semaglutide/Wegovy) and GLP-1/GIP agonists (Tirzepatide/Mounjaro) that have to be injected weekly. These drugs must be injected under the skin once a week.

In a comparison of the two drugs, Tirzepatide (Eli Lilly) is currently slightly ahead with a weight reduction of 20 percent within 72 weeks. Wegovy came in at just under minus 14 percent.
