Curious own goal: “Never seen anything like it!”

As a result of an obvious blackout, GAK kicker Michael Lang kicked the ball into his own goal unchallenged in the style of a world-class striker during the 4:3 defeat against Wolfsberger AC on Saturday. His coach Rene Poms was stunned: "I've never seen anything like it!"

What happened on Saturday at the Merkur Arena in Graz was not for the faint-hearted. GAK were leading 3:0 in their Bundesliga clash with WAC up until the 80th minute and looked like certain winners, but then the Carinthians staged a brilliant comeback. In the end it was 4:3 for the visitors.

Rene Poms was devastated after his first defeat as GAK coach. "That was a broadside for us today, but we will come back stronger," promised the Styrian.

He had no explanation for Lang's own goal: "I've never actually seen it in this form before, that you can shoot a ball forward at your own goal at the last moment. Very strange, we'll discuss that later."

 Christian Lichtenberger was also at a loss for words. "I can only imagine that he thought he was under a lot of pressure and wanted to clear the ball sideways past the goal. If you score it as a striker in front, it's a dream goal. He certainly didn't do it on purpose, I'm one hundred percent convinced of that," he said about his teammate in the Sky interview.
